Brain-Compatible Dance Education (BCDE) Workshop
Anna Mansbridge
January 25th, 2025
Location: Queen Elizabeth Elementary School. 921 Salter St, New Westminster, BC V3M 6G8
Workshop Details: In this fun and invigorating workshop participants will experience the work of Seattle based dance educator Anne Green Gilbert, and her world-renowned pedagogy Brain-Compatible Dance Education (BCDE). This pedagogy emphasizes creativity, improvisation, sharing, and the understanding of concepts. All BCDE lessons start with the BrainDance. During the morning session, Anna will lead participants through the eight patterns of the BrainDance, based on the fundamental movement patterns that most babies move through in the first year of life, connecting the brain and body, and laying the foundations for life-long learning and development. We will explore how the BrainDance patterns can be varied in many ways, for example through concepts, using props, and folk dances, and can be used with children of all ages. In the afternoon we will experience the BCDE five-part lesson structure: Warming-up, Exploring the Concept, Developing Skills, Creating, and Cooling Down. We will look at how this pedagogy creates a supportive learning environment for all students, giving opportunities for creative explorations and skill development in ways that are meaningful, and that encourages social and emotional engagement.
