Resources for Black History Month

February is Black History Month. This is an important time for teachers to focus on the contributions of Afro-Canadians and raise awareness of the historical injustices they have faced. Visit the BCTF Antiracism Action Group’s Black History Month web page for information and resources.

You will also find many resources and videos on the government of Canada’s Black History Month website to help students build the skills and knowledge to help develop spaces that are free of racism and discrimination.

Open School BC Math Videos Project

The BC Teachers’ Federation is seeking 10 secondary school teachers of mathematics,
history of mathematics, and computer science willing to participate as BCTF representatives in
the Open School BC Math Videos Project. The goal of the project is to produce up to five videos with matching lesson/activity plans. These videos will be hosted on an Open School BC web page and will be linked from the Ministry of Education curriculum website. Ministry of Education Language Template Update

The BC Teachers’ Federation is seeking four members to participate as Federation representatives on a Ministry of Education committee tasked to update the Ministry Language Template that will further support language learning opportunities in the province. The Ministry will be assembling a small team of teachers to update the language template for use at Grades 5–12. In addition, the Ministry will be seeking advice from the team on processes for use, review, and revision of the Language Template. Cross Border Social Justice Conference in Surrey

The second annual Cross Border Social Justice Conference for BC, Washington, and Oregon teachers is happening on Saturday, March 2, 2019. This year’s keynote speaker is Mercedes Martinez, President of the Puerto Rico Teachers’ Federation, who will discuss her union’s successful efforts to hold back attempts to privatize education after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. The conference will also feature many excellent workshops and a dance party with Queer as Funk. Get all the details and register at crossborderconference.weebly.com.
